Are you wondering what happens with the Olympics? Well if you are then you have came to the right place! The Summer Olympics is an event that happens every four years in the summer. Different countries around the world come to one country and sports teams compete. There are different sports like swimming, gymnastics, golf, tennis and many more. The Summer Olympics is just a time to have fun, have a friendly competition and enjoy the many different sports that can be played in the summer. Some historical facts are…… The summer Olympics first started on April 6, 1896 – April 15, 1896. If you question on how many sports are there in the Olympics then here is an answer. There are only 5 contested sports since 1896! When I heard about that my mind was blown. The reason why there were only five sports to really compete with in 1896 was because many sports were added but many of them were removed. Now in 2016 we have 39 Olympic sports.

Is air invisible? If it is, why is it invisible? Air is invisible because it is a gas. Some tiny particles filled with gas allows the light to pass through them because they are so spread apart. Gas does not hold shape. Therefore it is easy to see through them. If air is in a balloon the air will push the balloon into the shape that it will form into. In that situation, the air inside it will turn into the color or the material the air is inside. The particles in the air make the air very thin, so the light goes through them. It also makes anything outside it a lighter tone, because the air has NO color. Air is transparent, you can see through them. The light goes through the air, not being affected, because, as I said the molecules are really spread out, and thin. The solid objects touching each other, so there is no way the light can pass through it. The light bounces off of the air, so you can’t see it. So, the air really can be invisible! Back in the old days people had rights to their area and it also went up forever (owning a 1 sq. unit of land is actually infinite property when you include air and space). When airplanes came, smart people realized that you can’t just ask permission for every land. So they decided the government would just own the air above 500 ft. After that going infinitely up it would be owned by the government. Then in 1957 the space race started. With that people knew space-shuttles couldn't just ask permission to go through each of the countries territories. Countries got together and say that the air rights should go up to a certain point*. They at least know that the barrier ends between 19-99 miles. Now let’s get to the law. If someone breaks the laws the register on that spacecraft the US could prosecute them. It’s basically like the spacecraft is also the US’s land. To shorten this wherever there’s no governing territory the citizen would have to follow their own country’s law. That means on the moon a 18 year old British person could do things that an 18 year old American couldn’t, and vice versa. Although what about the ISS? The International Space Station Agreement says extraterritorial jurisdiction (just another way for your country's law in a non-territorial space) applies for most cases. That means that if a Brit punched an American then America can jail the Brit. Same thing for property. Although Russia, for example, doesn’t really have to send one of its citizens to be jailed in America since it doesn’t follow the Extradition Treaties. On the ISS however, Russia would have to oblige with the US. Also, what happens if a baby was born (even though it hasn’t be proven that a baby can be born on the ISS)? Some countries don’t automatically give citizenship outside the country. Then the baby would take the citizenship of spacecraft’s registration place. Although that only applies for spaceships. If the baby was born on the Moon or Mars then...I don’t know. Nobody knows. This is one of the flaws of the space law. As Space evolves and space tourism becomes a thing, all these laws would have to be more uniformed. Not only in the next few decades the Space industry might get more developed, we need to political and legal groundwork for the final frontier. *Except for Colombia, Ecuador, Congo, Indonesia, Kenya, Uganda, and Zaire. They think they own space. It has spikes but it is not a porcupine. It has a tail but it is not a monkey. It gives milk but it is not a cow. Can you guess what it is? I don't think so. I’ll give another hint. The father is spiky. The mommy is sticky and the baby is sweet. So do you know it now. Well if you don't it is a jack fruit. Where does jackfruit grow? Jack fruit isn't really known very well over the united states. But it is well known in the Philippines,Brazil and India where it is found in abundance. In Chinatown jack fruit is not grown there but is always selled in the market. Where is it known One reason why in most parts of the world jack fruit is known well is because of how many good delicacies can be made with it. Especially in Kerala a state in India which makes a lot of amazing foods. Jackfruit is one of the top ten heaviest fruits in the entire world. Jackfruit trees A jack fruits tree can grow up to 30 meters even longer than a mango tree. Jackfruit trees can be even bigger than your house. Jackfruits are the largest tree borne fruit. In a single year a jackfruit tree can grow up to 250 jackfruits. Jackfruit A jackfruit can grow from 100 to 500 seeds. Jackfruit seeds are really good for your skin in many ways. Jackfruit seeds have a lot of anti cancer nutrients which can fight cancer. It also has a lot of vitamins which can be very helpful for your whole body. Jackfruit rind A jackfruits rind (skin) can help a cow's body in few ways. It is not much used by humans because it can't be cut easily and it doesn't tastes that good. A cow usually only eats the rind but sometimes if the jackfruit is ripe the cow can eat the whole thing, including the seeds. A jackfruit gives the same amount of good stuff for humans and cows. Jackfruit avrils The avrils of the jackfruit is what is always used the most. The arvin of the jackfruit is what covers the seeds inside the jackfruit. There can be 100 to 300 avrils in a jackfruit. If you have a soft jackfruit the avrils will be really, really sweet. But a rough jackfruit will make the avrils sour and hard to chew. Jackfruit rags Jackfruit rags are the stuff that cover the avrils. The jackfruit rags are rarely used around the world. Some people cook them into soup or other things. Other people give them to animals as food. The reason why the jackfruit rags aren't used much is because of their shape, feeling and their sour taste. In my opinion jackfruit should be planted in more places because it helps humans and animals. Jackfruit also helps fight of diseases and cure them. I also believe that jackfruit can also help in any food shortages. Now that you know about jackfruit spread the message to plant more Jackfruit trees so that it can help people in need. ![]() by Devon J. Now picture this - a section of the Atlantic Ocean having lots of boats originating from different spots and meeting each other. Now you’d probably be thinking, are there laws out in water? The simple answer to this yes, but is very complicated. Let’s start with the picture on the right of the coast of some place. Every country is permitted to territorial waters which are twelve miles of the coast line. They can create any type of law in that space. Passenger ships are sometimes allowed in these waters as an innocent passage. If foreign ships don’t have anything to do with commercial things like polluting the water, spying, fishing, etc. they are allowed in as long as it’s quick. Twelve miles after that they have what’s called “the contiguous zone”. They can make laws that only pertain to customs, taxation, immigration, and pollution. Two hundred miles after that is the EEZ (Exclusive Economic Zone). Beyond the contiguous zone is international waters, although in the EEZ only the country that has the EEZ is allowed to gain resources. Although there might be some exceptions like when two countries' water borders overlap. We’ll use the South China Sea for example. The South China Sea is in an important area for freight. In fact, more than ⅓ of the ships in the world pass through here. As you can see the picture on the left there are a bunch of countries that have land overlapping each other. When at least two countries are less than 400 nautical miles of each other it’s up to them where the borders end. Most solve it civilly by separating the zone halfway. Although when the money is high like in the South China Sea it can get less peaceful. You’ll see that most cruise ships have some countries name on the bottom next to something like Carnival Dream. Now, if a baby was born in the first twelve miles of water it will have the nationality of that country (The USA for this example) that owns the first twelve miles. This doesn’t apply to every country, though. You can find a list down below. Although with that there’s exception to that in itself. Foreign diplomats visiting or living in the US with the baby will not automatically receive citizenship. Now if it was born in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean will just take the nationality of their parents but some countries don’t follow it. The countries that don’t follow it well then the baby will just take the nationality of where the ship was registered. There have been several instances where people use it for bad use. This just shows how convoluted maritime law is. I’ve been wondering if there was really life on Mars! It sounds crazy but scientists say that there might be life on Mars. When I was looking on a website it said that they saw some water on Mars but it is a very cold planet so it is probably ice. They found many features that seem to be running water in it. They also found a little bacteria in the soil. When the astronauts were taking pictures they did not see any creatures lying around (aliens). Many scientists think that there is no life on Mars, but spacecrafts take pictures of mars during the seasons and it showed how the rocks change during the year. It didn’t really show anyone on Mars, it did change the soil. They say that they found different things on other planets so it might be a theory. I once had some Mars dust. I did not know what it was so I looked it up and it was actual Mars dust. It was really cool to have something that special. The scientists were actually correct. They still don’t know if there actually is life on Mars. They say it might be on other planets than mars. They also say that they still don’t know if aliens are real. They say next year they are going to dig into the ground to see if there are aliens or any other things. Many people have rumors that there is life on Mars and aliens are real. You definitely should look more things up on this topic. You can also think of your wonders it may be really cool. ![]() by Thea L. and Valerie X. Many people wonder how dreams happen during your sleep. Dreams are strange: sometimes they are terrifying, sometimes happy. But you never know what your dream is going to bring you. On weird occasions, you see something in your dreams and then see it in real life. Most people think that dreams are about things that you worry about but that isn’t the only things that you dream about. Mostly dreams are about things that will preferably not happen in real life. Dreams are basically visions in your head that go on at night. Nightmares are dreams, but scary instead. Night terrors are things that you are so afraid of, that your body sometimes jerks or you scream. When your body jerks awake during sleep, it’s because your heart rate decreased so fast that your brain is waking you up to see if you are still alive. Sometimes when you wake up you will have a clear memory of what happened in your dream that night, but that isn’t always the case. You usually cannot really remember what happened in your dream. Did you know that most people remember their dreams in black and white, even though they dream in color? While in the first few stages it is easy for a human to be woken up but going further into the stages, it gets harder to wake the person out of his sleep. Loud sounds can interfere with sleep. They can wake you up, or come into your dream. Most dreams that are vivid are in a deep sleep. When you sleep your body is basicly partly taking a rest but some parts are still working. For example, the brain is 10% more creative at night. Dreams occur in certain stages of sleep. The stages of sleep
The brain during REM is a lot more active than the brain when it’s not going though REM. Non- REM has bits of red spread around, while REM has red all over. Rapid eye movement increases brain waves, but non REM doesn’t have many brain waves. The sources we used to find the information are: http://www.sleepdex.org/stages.htm by Lisandi D.
Global warming is a rise in temperature of the Earth’s surface, oceans, and atmosphere. Greenhouse gases are causing Global Warming. The greenhouse gases are Carbon Dioxide, Methane, Nitrous Oxide. These gases help the Earth stay warm, but too much of it and the Earth gets caught in Global Warming condition. The thicker layer of greenhouse gasses traps more heat. This reacts in an increasing average temperature. Then the Earth becomes hotter. There are many reasons for Global Warming such as smoke from vehicles and factories, cutting down trees for roads and buildings which cause deforestation and mining activities. Some predicted impacts of global warming are loss of sea ice, sea level rise, intensive heat wave, and climate change. These impacts affect humans, animals, and the world in many ways. Global Warming is very dangerous. If we don’t stop Global Warming now, it can wipe off plants, animals, and humans. We know that trees can help to balance the atmosphere and absorb carbon dioxide. So it is very important to plant more trees. Try to use the 3R’s ( Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle) whenever you can. Some of the other ways to stop Global Warming are used solar energy, save clean water, switch off electric appliances, avoid lighting at daytime and reduce the usage of hot water. Saving the Tallest
By Tamanna D. What do you know about giraffes? Well, there are some pretty cool facts about them. You know they are one of the tallest animals, thanks to their necks. Also, did you know giraffes have huge bones? In fact, they have to same number of bones in their neck as us! There are so many cool facts about giraffes. They are just great. However, giraffes are slowly disappearing. In fact, they are one of the more recent additions to the endangered list. The giraffe population in southern and Eastern Africa has declined by as much as 40% over the past 30 years, according to http://www.timeforkids.com/content/tfk-top-stories-12-08-16. In fact, in 2015, there were fewer than 100,000 giraffes in the wild. Why is this happening? Well, it is one of the many problems caused by us. Some people know what they are doing is wrong. Many people illegally hunt the giraffe for their meat and their hide. Some people don’t realize they are doing wrong. They cut down trees to make space for them, not know that they may be cutting down trees that giraffes eat. We need to save this beautiful animals. It is many people’s favorite animal. We need to stop cutting down trees, because it is harming the creatures that share this earth with us. Understand that we aren’t the owners of this earth, as many people think. We all need to understand that animals are meant to stay. So help preserve these animals, because they need to stay just as much as you do. |
